Sports events, their sponsors, participants, venues, suppliers and spectators increasingly wish to improve their sustainability and reduce their environmental impact. Thanks to the Ocean Recovery Alliance, and its Plastic Disclosure Project, there are now some initial steps sports events can take in this direction by minimizing their “plastic footprint”.
This document lays out guidelines to assist event organizers, including a checklist to assist with planning and a scorecard to help evaluate progress towards certification as a PDP Sport event. As you will see, these guidelines should be very achievable for most events. For events that already pride themselves on their sustainability, they should stretch further and seek ISO 20121 certification.
We are excited to have the Samsung Cross Bosphorus Swim, for its 30th Anniversary, in cooperation with the Turkish Olympic Committee, to be the first large global open water swim event, and the first sports event in Turkey, to underdake PDP Sport in order to pre-plan for reducing the plastic waste at the event.
